Pre Conference 4 Hour Workshops
Thursday, March 26
This year’s conference kicks off with two tracks of 4-hour workshops followed by a reception, tradeshow and special, bonus presentation by architect and managing editor of TreeHugger, Lloyd Alter.
Dylan Lamar, a Certified Passive House Consultant with Green Hammer, will present "designPH & PHPP_IP Tutorial Workshop". Bring your laptop to the conference loaded with registered versions of Sketchup, designPH, and the PHPP-IP v2 software. Dylan will respond to questions and dive into your issues during this interactive workshop designed to review best practices in the use of these tools for planning and certification purposes.
Dan Whitmore, Passive House expert from Hammer & Hand, will present an Advanced Passive House Builder's Workshop that is not to be missed. As a designer, builder, and Certified Passive House Consultant, he completed one of the first Passive Houses in Washington State in 2010. Dan concentrates on project development at Hammer and Hand and provides energy and building consulting services throughout the region. He is an Instructor for the Passive House Institute US, co-developer of the PHIUS Builders' Training program, Board Member of the Passive House Alliance US, and a founding board member of Passive House Northwest.
Gary Klein, President of Gary Klein & Associates, has been intimately involved in energy efficiency and renewable energy since 1974. One-fifth of his career was spent in the Kingdom of Lesotho, the rest in the United States. Mr. Klein has a passion for hot water: getting into it, getting out of it and efficiently delivering it to meet customers' needs. Mr. Klein will present "Where is Hot Water in High Performance Buildings?" This session will discuss practical measures you can incorporate into your next project that result in high performance hot water systems and very satisfied customers. Bring your floor plans and your questions. We will demonstrate the principles, not just discuss them!
Bronwyn Barry designs buildings, products, organizations, marketing campaigns, and events - and prefers to play in the high-performance sandbox with the bold and adventurous. An international background and unconventional training have fostered a creative mind and ability to problem solve. She is bringing the beta version of the PHPP plug-in being developed to help users generate thousands of variations of their unique design to determine an optimized performance design for each building.
Zack Semke, Director of Business Development and Chief Evangelist with Hammer & Hand, will present an overview of Passive House, including how the building approach provides a practical path to Zero Energy Building, and the important but often overlooked benefit of high performance building: the health and happiness it brings to occupants.
Friday Conference Highlights
In addition to three full tracks of programming, we will hear from two innovators of Passive House - Gunter Lang and Steve Hallett. Plus, we will have our high-performance building products and services tradeshow.
Günter Lang has spoken about Passive House across the globe. His extensive travels and uncanny ability to join people together, have earned him the unofficial title as international passive house Ambassador.
Steve Hallett is an author and professor of botany at Purdue University. His basic philosophy, which is boldly and entertainingly laid out in his new book, The Efficiency Trap, is simply this: "Stop trying to save the world, it's not working." You won't want to miss this thought provoking, example-rich presentation. Join us for "Passive Houses, Efficiency Traps, and some Unexpected Comments on Carbon."
