PHNW Fall Conference Sept 16th in Seattle

Passive House beyond Single Family construction

It's official - the next PHnw conference is in Seattle on Sept 16th at Seattle Pacific University.  Our focus will be larger scale construction projects such as Multi-Family, Commercial, and Industrial Passive House projects.  Our Keynote speaker will be Günter Lang, Architect and CEO of LANG Consulting in Austria. Günter has been intimately involved with the Passive House movement in Austria, having served for 8 years as the manager of the IG Passivhaus.  In addition, he has written and presented extensively on Passive House and Zero Energy constructions.  His background also enables him to address the area of energy infrastructure and the Passive House community on a national level.

We will also be welcoming Adam Cohen, CPHC and contractor of the CEED Passive House school project in Virginia.  Adam has also broken ground on a Passive House Student Assembly building and was just given the go ahead for the first Passive House dental clinic in the world!  Adam's experience in the area of Passive House commercial construction projects in the US will be showcased as he teaches one of the 2 additional classes we will be offering the day before the conference.

Andre Desjarlais of the OakRidge National Laboratories will be joining us to talk about WUFI moisture migration software.  He has an extensive background in building envelope science and currently heads that group at ORNL.  Andre is also a member of the ASTM and ASHRAE and serves on several committees with those organizations.

Mike Hatten, PE and Principal of Solarc Architecture and Engineering, Inc. will bring his valuable experience in the area of building energy efficiency and collaborative team building to our conference.  He will present energy strategies and technologies for those areas such as fans, lighting, plug loads that go beyond the heating and cooling of the buildings in order to meet the Passive House requirements.  As someone highly educated in real world building energy issues, his background will help us focus on those areas that the larger scale Passive House projects will need to address.

Peter Reppe, CPHC, LEED AP, Energy Analyst, and Project Manager of Solarc will also be presenting.  Peter is also a PHNW board member and has recently returned from Innsbruck, Austria where he attended the International Passivhaus conference and toured some of the PH projects there.  He will be giving us a summary of design strategies and solutions that are working in Europe with the larger scale commercial Passive House projects that have been completed there.

There will be more additions to the lineup and I will be updating you as they get nailed down.  Sign-ups for the conference are open to all on our Events page and sign-ups for the classes the day before (large scale PH construction considerations taught by Adam Cohen and another on moisture considerations when designing buildings taught by Andre Desjarlais) will be limited to the first 30 people who sign up and are currently open to PHnw members only until August 7th.  As you can see we have quite a good slate set up.  Check back here at PHnw.org for further updates.
